Digital Two for Tuesday 148

This week I (Cora)am the guest designer.  I had off Monday and thought it would be fun to participate in the guest designer challenge.

This week I have two images from old Harley Davidson ads from the 20's.  I always love these images because both of my brothers are bike riders and these images make an easy cards.

Instructions:
First I stamped a large background image from Darcie's using Distress Ink Peacock Feathers on a kraft paper card.  I get these cards from Hobby Lobby and just love how they take the stamped image.  I then rubbed some Snow Cap color Adirondack dabber paint on top of the stamped image to tone it down a little.  I printed the motorcycle image in sepia 2x.  Then cut out the motorcycle and use foam tape to make it stick up from the background sepia image.  This gives the card a little feeling of motion.   Before glueing all the pieces I rub them with a small Versafine ink pad in Pinecone.  This one of my favorite tools.  I have an old versafine mini ink pad I have used for years and it adds just the right amount of distress to the edges.  I misted the whole card with pearl mists in several colors as a finishing touch.

 This tag was made using the same image as above.  The background is inked with Shaded Lilac Distress Ink and then stamped with Paper Lace 2 by Fed B Mullet using Ranger Archival Ink in Olive. The metal tape strip in the background is embossed Tim Holtz Alterations embossing folder.  You can get a whole roll of this tape from a hardware store.  I then treated the embossed image with several colors of Vintaj patina paints for metal.  I am not sure who manufactures the brads.  I applied the bike image and the Happy Birthday with foam tape.

My Bio:
My name is Cora Harkins and I have been paper crafting for over 20 years.  I taught classes at a local scrapbooking store and had a stamp line for awhile.  My college education is in costume and set design.  I ended up going into another field but never lost my passion for vintage clothing, surfaces and history.  I started collecting magazines as sort of a living reference library for my costumes.

Several years ago I started to share my images online with all of you on my two blogs Clearly Vintage and Digital Two for Tuesday.  Every week in the summer and fall I scour flea markets looking for magazines, old photos and postcards to share.  It is a labor of love to post these images.  I save the magazines from being cut up by well meaning Ebay sellers who buy them to take apart and sell piece by piece.   Many of the vendors know me now and save things for me and you.  You can see my artwork at my blog Paper Flowers.

Digital Two for Tuesday 147

Today our talented guest designer is Sherry Hickey.  Sherry's technique is paper piecing.   She has showcased this technique in two delightful cards.  I love how she has used papers to add color to the images.

Sherry's Bio in her own words:

"I was born in Washington, DC, and I have lived in nearby Arlington, Virginia, for many years. I have been drawing and painting all my life. I spent my career as a federal employee working for the U.S. Congress. When I retired I completed my bachelor's degree in visual arts. I wrote and illustrated a children's book (www.sherryhickey.blogspot.com) which was published by a small company in Milwaukee. It's the story of a lady who makes cards for people, which grew from my love of sending cards, thank you notes, and all the years I wrote letters on Capitol Hill. I know how much a personal letter means to people! As I was looking for audiences that might like my book, I discovered the world of papercrafting and Operation Write Home, the organization that sends handcrafted cards to our troops for them to write home on. That was 2010 and I have made cards for OWH ever since. The beauty and variety of papers and tools available to crafters never ceases to amaze and delight! When I learned about paper piecing, I loved it; I think it goes back to my childhood love of paper dolls! I love experimenting with different patterned paper. All the new mini DP pads are great for paper piecing with their reduced-size patterns. I love vintage and retro styles.  It was a lucky day when I found Digital Two for Tuesday, a fantastic source for beautiful images! "

This week we have the amazingly talented artist Sue Berker as our guest designer.  We have been so lucky to have artist each week with such different styles and I just love how Sue has used this week's images.  I gave Sue two very different images and she took the challenge and used both in her cards.   I just love Sue's color combinations and her coloring details.   You can see more of her work on her beautiful blog Sharing What I Love.

Sue's bio in her own words.

"My name is Sue Berker.  I live in central Illinois in the USA.  I've been married to my husband for 10 and a half years and together we have 5 kids and 3 grandkids.  We are senior citizens, retired but still quite active with a number of things.  Since our family members live elsewhere, we do a bit of traveling so that we can spend time with them.

I began stamping about 10 years ago, became a Stampin'Up! demo for 4 years and then needed to help support the economy of the rest of the stamping vendors in this craft, so I quit being a demo.  I have done a little bit of scrapbooking but my real passion is stamping.  I lean towards a more clean look in my stamping.  I also like to create 3-D papercrafts.  I have had the pleasure and privilege of meeting several on my online friends in real life.  It's a great craft world - don't you agree?

I thank Cora for all of  the work she does to make these lovely, vintage images available to us and also for allowing me to participate as a Guest Designer on her blog."

Digital Two for Tuesday 145

This week our guest designer is another long time follower Maxine Diffey.  Maxine has a wonderful eye for color and texture.  She has created two whimsical cards with today's images.  I love all the glitter and glitz she has added to the fairy image and the elegance of the doily background on her second card.  Be sure to follow the link below to Maxine's blog to see more of her lovely projects and cards.

Here is a description of Maxine's cards in her own words.  You can see how Maxine has used dry embossing to accentuate the images.

"I dry embossed both background panels, and on the pink floral paper I applied the ink  ‘direct to paper’ to highlight the embossing, then painted it with iridescent medium.

The image I coloured with chalks, then used Kindy Gltiz for the sparkle on the wings and the frock, fussy cut it and mounted it on foam dots for dimension.  The final touch was to run a piece of double sided tape across the base of the card and add micro beads to it.

                                               

For the second card I embossed the card base and layered over that – I used the Argyle folder which gives and angular contrast to the circular pattern of the doily and oval of the die cut."

Maxine's Bio:

"I have been stamping/cardmaking for about 10 years, mainly on my own.  I learned the basic embossing of images from a friend, but most of my learning has been initially from magazines, and then the internet.  I have attended some classes, and I love learning new techniques.  I started blogging here about three years ago, and have enjoyed the experience, it is a great way to connect with other card makers.  I first experienced digi stamps two and a half years ago and have learnt to love them, especially  once I discovered how to size them, and which mediums worked best to colour them with.

I live in a relatively small town in New Zealand with my husband – we have two adult offspring who are married, and three grand children whom we visit, and have to visit, as often as possible – they keep us young and active. Although I have strong Christian beliefs, I am not particularly active in my local church due to health issues.

I also garden, knit, embroider and make bobbin, crochet and needle lace, and sew for the grandies on occasion – having a myriad of hobbies keeps me occupied, and the skills often ‘cross over’ from one to another."

This is from a Pabst beer add from an 1896 Truth magazine. I deleted the inside of the emblem so you could use it in your artwork. Below are some examples of how I play with the images for my artwork.

Surprise!

Surprise!  We have two guest designer's this week.  Our second guest designer is Susan Coonrod. Susan made three amazing items with one of the images.  She made a book mark, card & gift tag. It is a wonderful gift set.  The images are all different sizes.  This is why Susan loves digital images so much. You can make them any size that you need vs. the traditional stamped image that only stamps in one size.

A description of Susan's projects in her own words.

"I lightly distressed with a Sky Blue Stamp pad from StaminUp and distressed the edges with a dark brown stamp pad.

I usually don't used a lot of sentiments, because when I'm in the mood for card making, I make a large amount of them and then use for all occasions.  I pull the one out I want to use and hand write a personal sentiment inside.  I think this makes it more personal."

Her bio:

"I have been scrap booking for about 10 years, but became intrigued with card making about 5 years ago.  I have started using digital images in the last two months and began blogging about the same time. Digital Two for Tuesday 143

Today our guest designer is Leslie.  I found Leslie's blog a few months ago  and it is filled with stories and beautiful projects.  Her work is truly inspirational.  I love this birthday card she has created with this week's images.  Her technique is monochromatic.

Here is a description of Leslie's card in her own words. " I printed the image on Flourishes' Classic Ivory cardstock and colored with Copic markers in shades of gray.  Pale gray ink was sponged around the edges of the image panel.  I'd hoped to make this card completely monochromatic, and I did accomplish that with the coloring, but then I mixed in some tan with the designer paper, and couldn't help but add that little pop of color with the red string on the button.  Almost monochromatic.  The button, by the way, is nearly as vintage as the image.  A Cuttlebug embossed border adds a bit of trim across the front.  The black cardstock (from CTMH) has a white core which peeks through when the cardstock is sanded, as I did around the card edges and over the embossed trim."

Leslie's Bio:  "Card making is my favorite indoor pastime and I only wish I had more hours in a day to spend on it.  I'll admit that once I dipped my toe into the digital stamping water I followed with a headlong plunge and went a little nuts.  Oh, my, so many images to choose from!  Imagine all the clicking and saving when I happened upon Digital Two for Tuesday.  So... when Cora contacted me about this guest spot, well, she didn't have to ask twice.  I love what she does here!

I enjoy life on the southern Oregon coast with my husband, Rich, and two Golden Retrievers, Wally and LuLu.  In fact, my blog centers around the Goldens and the goings on in the garden -- my other passion.  There was a time I was all about design team work -- primarily for my favorite stamp company, Flourishes -- but I've settled into a more relaxed pace and now I wonder how I ever kept up.  I also spend four days a week intensely focused on my job in a medical lab.  I do most of my coloring on coffee breaks, and put the cards together when I've got time and creative energy at home.  Winter is coming and I'll be happily shifting my spare time attention to the stamp room.  I'm sure Cora will have some fabulous new/old Christmas images for us.  Thank you, Cora, and thank you all for visiting."

A Beautiful Bouquet
