Iron Work Patterns

I hope you are enjoying these intricate iron work patterns from 1895. They are inspiring. I can see them used as backgrounds or even the main focus of a card. They could be used with one of the vintage images at my other site Clearly Vintage. The half circle one could be used as a fan. I have so many ideas and I know you do too. Everyone seems to like the images edited by Pixelmator. They are extremely clear but I am scanning at a very high dpi. Next I will have to experiment with lowering the dpi to see how low I can go with out losing too much clarity. The following images are from a December 1911 McCall's Magazine. This was truly an elegant time. When I was a teenager a version of this look came back again for a short time. There was lots of lace, big collars and beautiful sleeves. I just loved Gunne Sax clothing by Jessica McClintock.

I finally had a chance to download a new program today for repairing my images. I will be trying a few programs the next few weeks. Hopefully I will find one that works for all of my blogs. The one I used today is called Pixelmator. Please let me know if you like the clarity on these pictures.

We've Got Power

Finally the power is back on. We stayed at my mother in laws a few nights as the house was about 42 degrees F. Unfortunately that was a two hour commute to work. But it was toasty warm. Most of my friends still do not have power. Unbelievable! In honor of the snow I am posting two images from the Little Folks Paint Book. There is no copyright but I think it is from the late 30's. These pages are on pulp paper and no matter how clear I get them in editing they seem to show up with spots when I post them.

No Power Again

Sorry I have no images to post today. We have had no power/water since Saturday due to a freak late October snowstorm. We got 16 inches of heavy snow. Unfortunately the trees had leaves on them still so most of them are damaged. Our lilac and forsythia bushes are decimated. The willow trees have lost their tops.
I will post when we get our Internet and power back.

The hurricane Irene hit while we were there and then it took us 2 days to get home because the hurricane had moved to the northeast USA. It was quite an adventure.

These two images are from the same booklet as the previous post called Neighborly Advice from the early 20's. Unfortunately between the ageing of the booklet and the image size they are not as clear as I would like. Eventually I will have to investigate a better photo imaging program that would emphasize/darken the lines that are lightened without having to add back in each pixel individually. The program I am working with is 10 years old but it is so easy to use.

Exciting news! My 10 year old daughter has started a new blog called Learning From Our Past. It is a child's view of history. She has loved history since she was a little girl and now wants to share what she has learned with other children. At the flea market she collects old photos and ephemera of our U.S. Presidents and other famous people. I have brought out a book from a few months ago and scanned a few more illustrations. I am loving this book Yourself and Your House Wonderful from 1913. The drawings are so cute. I love the swimming by the sea picture. It must have been hot in those bathing suits.

This week we have images from a 1921 edition of Gritli's Children by Johanna Spyri. Johanna Spyri also wrote Heidi. I found this book last week at the flea market along with 6 more wonderful books. Each one of those books are one hundred years old or more. Make sure to check my other blog Saturday Image Bonus for some color plates from this book.

These images were extremely hard to clean up. The first one I would clean up and then after saving all the flaws would reappear. My daughter Michaela cleaned up the second one and she patiently worked on it for a half and hour.

I am just loving these hats from the Fashion Service Magazine May 1927. They make me want to go back in time just to wear the fun fashions. This was the era of my grandparents. My maternal grandmother who was quite fashionable wore a flapper dress for her wedding gown. My sister redid the dress a few years ago and wore it to a few black tie events. It is still gorgeous and timeless.

My parent's engagement photo. I made this collage for their 55th.

These are two collages I made for his birthday one year.

I thank you all for your prayers for my dad but he passed yesterday morning. He and my mom had been together for 59 years. We are all doing ok. I guess I am still in shock as it is hard to believe that he is gone. My dad was one of those incredible people who knew a little bit about every subject. He was always learning new things and had an incredible love of books. My dad Iz Ungar was a polymer chemist and even after he retired he worked until he was 79 travelling worldwide consulting. He had over 50 US Patents to his name and 100 international patents.

Sorry to be late but it was a crazy day today. My dad was admitted to the hospital and I live very far away so I was not able to visit. Hopefully they will find out what is wrong quickly and he will be home soon. If you can say an extra prayer or think extra good thoughts for Cora's dad I would appreciate it.

I am posting a few more of the doll images as I already have a bunch of these scanned and I hate to disappoint you. Sometimes I think clowns are creepy. You judge. Creepy or fun?

I have some exciting news.

For some time now I have dabbled in making chocolate candies and bake goods and now I have decided to become a Dove Chocolatier to combine my love of chocolate and of course sales. I have a Dove website that you can access if you follow this link. The products are amazing. Last night my family tried the chocolate mousse and it was delicious. Today our final Holiday Trio guest designer is Olga. She is also from Russia. I thank her for her patience as we had great difficulties emailing each other and lots of confusion with two Olgas from Russia hosting at the same time. Olga has made an amazing book for all her holiday memories. There are lots of details and some of the images I didn't recognize with all her intricate coloring. Here is a description in Olga's words.
" It is a mini album with my little daughter Sasha's winter photos, colored pictures related to winter and the New Year's. Each spread has the lyrics from Russian song "The Forest Raised a Christmas Tree". This song is the one I sing for Sasha when I rock her to sleep. Here are the pages with the Digital Tuesday images. The last is empty. I want use it for a photo for the new year. "

Thank you to all the terrific guest designers for Holiday Trio. Each one of you made such original and challenging projects. I would never been able to keep up with all the assignments if you all had not been so great. Everyone got their assignments in early or on time. I never worried once that all my followers would be disappointed.

I hope you are all enjoying your holidays. Unfortunately my daughter and I had a fun road trip planned but we got 15 inches of snow instead and are house bound for a day or so. At least I didn't have to get up and figure out how to get to the office in all this snow. I am looking out the window now deciding if I want to start shovelling or make something wonderful with all these images. HMMM... Not much of a choice!

Today we have a very special guest designer from Russia. She has created a beautiful ornament using some of the images in the last few weeks. Here is her bio in her own words.

"Hi! My name is Olga. I'm 25. I'm from Omsk, Siberia, Russia. In my spare time I enjoy cardmaking and creating interesting scrap objects.

I made a decoration for the Christmas tree. I decorated the box and created a foundation for the house. The two pictures are printed on the clear film, which looks like windows.

Our guest designer this week is the talented Barbara Diane. She has made a beautiful card using an image posted last week. I love the leaf details and her coloring of the image. She has transformed this vintage image into a delightful card.

Here is Barbara Diane's description of her card. "The image was printed on white CS and was colored with markers and the background was done in 4 shades of chalk – beige/brown/blue with a touch of yellow. The image was then cut out along the outside of the arch and attached to a 3-layer card front of yellow/blue/black CS – of which I first outlined the edges of the blue and yellow in black to coordinate with the black edge of the image. I used a punch for the 3 different shapes of leaves and then outlined each individual leaf in black and drew free hand the lines on each leaf. I then punched small circles for the berries and outlined them in black. The leaves/berries were added to the card using glue dots to give them dimension. "

This week I have three more cute images from advertising graphics magazines from the 1920's. I just love the style of the people in these images.

Our guest designer this week is the talented Pauline. She has created a beautiful box using the Santa image from last week. All of the the guest designers were charged with making a project from any of the images I will be posting in the next few weeks and Pauline done an amazing box using this wonderful holiday image.

Here is Pauline's bio in here own words. "I live in the south east of Australia, in the town where I was born and raised. I am a cardmaker, scrapbooker, stitcher, and beader. I enjoy tackling all sort of challenges and styles in my papercrafts... but my current favourites would be using digital images (colouring with chalks, markers, watercolours, pencils) and using vintage photographs (with beads, buttons, lace, ribbon etc). I also create cards using stitching and embroidery, and beading, and often employ those into my other creations. I tend to favour uncomplicated styles/layouts. I also make jewellery, and favour vintage styles - my pieces are individually crafted, and no two are the same. Although I am lucky enough to be able to sell some of my cards and jewellery at a local market, and by special order, I love to share my creations as gifts to friends and family.

I would love to thank Cora for the opportunity to create for her blog. It is a joy and a pleasure to do so! The creation I share here with you is something that I would not normally do - I don't often create 3D projects, so it was a joy to create and share something different with you .... "

Holiday Trio Week in Review

Today our guest hostess has made three projects from several of the images previously posted this week. So I thought we would do a week in review. Hopefully her amazing projects will inspire you to make a handmade gift for that special person or decorations for your home. Be sure to post it here in the comments section so we can all see what you create.

Our talented guest hostess today is Willemien Katerberg. Willemien lives near the shores of lake Huron in Ontario with her husband. Her spare time is spent creatively in paper, hybrid and digital crafts. She started scrapbooking in 2004 and it didn't take long for her to pick up other paper crafts and their digital counterparts. Here is a description of the projects in the artists words.
"I had so much fun working with these images. I created three projects; an altered decorative tile, an altered candle, and a gift box. This Santa image is absolutely amazing. I had fully intended to do a laser copy transfer onto the tile, but of course I procrastinated and I couldn't justify driving through a snowstorm for just one little photocopy, so I printed and adhered tissue paper to the tile which I then coloured. For the candle and the gift box I used the images that were posted in Holiday Trio 6. I printed the Christmas cat image in dark green to match with the card stock use don the box (it's not that noticeable in these pictures) I also used Bookend 2 to wrap around the back of the candle. Over the next few days I will be posting complete details of my projects on my blog for those who would like more information. "

Today's guest designer is Krisa. What a trooper! She had some family issues come up but still made sure that she got her project in to me on time. Thank you so much Krisa. Both of her projects are imaginative and beautiful. Though I needed to hide them from my daughter who still believes in Santa. I think my daughter knows the presents will stop if she doesn't.

Here is Krisa's description of her projects in her own words. "I went with the idea of "gifts for Santa" with my projects. My first thought with these images were traditional old-world European paper cones that are hung on trees as ornaments and often filled with goodies. For both projects I resized and printed the images, colored with watercolor pencils then inked over them with Tim Holtz Distress Ink (lightly) in Antique Linen. The pearlescent paper on the cone was from Club Scrap, as was the green used for embellishment and the holly leaves. The red paper is DCWV. The leaves were punched from an older Quickutz holly photo turn die, and inked with distress ink in Pine Needle. A friend (Colleen - http://crazycrickitt.blogspot.com/) had given me the hand-made roses and they seemed a perfect pairing with the holly leaves and cone, the ribbon is simply from my stash (I think it's offray ...).

The little jar is actually a re-purposed sugar scrub container, but it seemed the perfect size for this elongated Santa image. I used a Spellbinders nestability scalloped circle die for all of the scalloped embellishments on the projects. Ink on the little treat jar (it will be filled with with M&Ms for Santa shortly, from my DD) is Peeled Paint (also distress ink). "

Holiday Trio 6

Today our guest hostess is Shirley. She has created a 2 cards using one of the holiday images below. She has added lots of vintage touches to her cards and beautiful flowers add to the festive look.

Here is her bio and a description of her artwork in her own words. "I used to be a neat freak about the house, everything had a place and everything in it's place .... very square, neat and tidy .... really could eat off my floor .... that is, until I found paper, then it all changed. Still love tidy but not nearly as obsessive (truth is I don't have the time anymore) because I have a new obsession paper and embellishments. Everything is second place to this .... except hubby, Penny, children & Grandkids of course. I am one of those people that once I have mastered something I get bored of it very quickly but not so with cardmaking because you can create something completely different with every single piece of paper, and that's what I try to do.

Today is my first experiment with different backgrounds and very pleased with the effect. Took original photo of card resting on a Kay & Co paper , the next image I cut and pasted from the original photo and layered onto a digital background .... really pleased with the effect."
